Driver Education FAQ
Driver Education
What is driver education?
Driver Education consists of a total of 36 hours - 30 hours of classroom + 6 1-hour behind-the-wheel driving lessons. The expectation of each portion are as follows:
- Students must achieve at least an 80% in the classroom to be considered passing that portion of driver education.
- Students must achieve a passing evaluation on their sixth drive.
- Students are not allowed to break the law more than five times, or they will be considered incomplete in their driving portion of driver education.
- Students who receive an incomplete on their sixth drive must attempt to pass the drive again if they wish to continue being a driver education student. (There is a $45 fee to purchase the additional drive.)
What do I need to bring with me to class?
Coach's will supply everything you need for the classroom course. You may bring a small snack for breaks or we have vending on-site.
Do I still attend if there is inclement weather?
Coach's Driver Education tries to keep to the schedule for students driving and attending classes. There are times when drives or classes must be canceled due to inclement weather. Unless drives are canceled by Coach's Driver Education, you are expected to attend your scheduled appointment or a $30 fee may be assessed for missing the drive.
You will receive a notification if a lesson is canceled.
How long do I have to complete the driver education program?
The program is typically completed within four months. Per the BMV, driver education students must be completed with the driver education/6 one-hour drives within 180 days. If you are not completed within this timeline, the BMV must be notified on your non-completion status.
Are skill waiver or road tests available?
Skill waiver/state road tests are only available to students who have completed/passed the entire driver education program at our driving school or took an online driver ed course and completed the 6 1-hour drives with our school.
Students must be age appropriate to take the test (16 years and 90 days old).
The test needs to be taken before the Learner's Permit expires. This service is not available online, you must call to purchase and schedule. Once an appointment is made, there is no option to reschedule and there are no refunds.
Learner's Permit
How old do I need to be to get my permit?
You must be 15 years old to take driver education. On the first day of class, you will be given CDE Form to obtain the permit. You are eligible for your driver's license at 16 and 90 days.
Students choosing not to take driver education may obtain a driving permit at the age of 16. This is done at the BMV. You will then be eligible to obtain your permit at 16 and 270 days.
Keep in mind ALL students must hold a permit for at least 180 days before obtaining a license.
Do I need to obtain my permit before enrolling in driver ed?
No, students will be issued a CDE form the first day of class to bring to the BMV to obtain their driver education permit. All students are required to take a 50 question test at the BMV to obtain a permit. Students do not have to retake a written test to obtain their driver's license. They are, however, still required to take a driving skills test through the BMV or at Coach's to obtain their driver's license.
What do I do if I lose my CDE form?
Coach's Driver Education will reissue a new CDE to you at an additional charge.
What do I need to bring to the BMV to obtain my permit?
- The CDE Form provided by Coach's Driver Education
- Social Security Card
- Original Birth Certificate or a Passport
- Documents that Show the students Proof of Residence. (A complete list of documentation can be found on the BMV website - www.mybmv.com)
Behind-the-Wheel Lessons
When can I schedule my drive times?
Students taking driver ed classes at our locations may begin making appointments with our instructors as long as they have already obtained their permit and have completed their first day of class. Students must log in to schedule drives. You do not need to wait until you have completed the classroom portion to schedule drives.
Students taking the online class must present their Completion Certificate from the online company and pay for the behind-the-wheel package on our website before scheduling. They will receive their CDE Form in the mail to obtain their learner's permit. Once the permit is obtained, students may then log in to schedule their drives.
All drives are done on an individual basis. We feel an individual approach is an asset to the student. Therefore, we do not do multiple students in the car at the same time during drives.
What happens if I miss or change one of my drive times?
Students who want to reschedule a drive time must do so prior to 72 hours of the scheduled drive time or a $30 fee will be assessed for missing the appointment. The $30 fee is also assessed for students who miss the drive entirely.
Coach's Driver Education reserves the right to cancel all further scheduled drives if account fees are not paid.
How do I schedule my driving lessons?
Once you have your permit, you can log in to schedule your drives online. You must have at least two days between drives. You are not allowed to schedule drives until after the first day of class. If you do not follow these policies, you may find your drives canceled at our discretion.
When can I schedule my driving lessons?
We drive seven days a week. The office is closed at noon on Saturdays and closed on Sundays. Our office hours and driving hours are not the same. You can view available driving lesson times by logging in to your account.
For drives that are scheduled when the office is closed, the door is locked so please wait for the instructor to arrive as they are driving with another student.
How do I get reminders for drive times?
Be sure to check the boxes when you register to receive email or text reminders. Parents may also receive reminders if they choose. You must confirm the notification. It is the student's responsibility to know their class and driving schedule.
How often can I schedule lessons?
Our system is set up so that students must have at least two days between driving lessons. It is important that parents/guardians practice with the students between the drive appointments with an instructor.
