Coach's Driver Education FAQ's
1. WHAT IS DRIVER EDUCATION?
Driver Education consists of a total of 36 hours - 30 hours of classroom + 6 one hour drives. The expectation of each portion are as follows:
Students must achieve at least an 80% in the classroom to be considered passing that portion of driver education.
Students must achieve a passing evaluation on their 6th drive. Students are not allowed to break the law more than 5 times, or they will be considered incomplete in their driving portion of driver education. Students who receive an incomplete on their 6th drive must attempt to pass the drive again if they wish to continue being a driver education student. (There is a $45 fee to purchase the additional drive.)
2. HOW OLD DO I NEED TO BE TO GET MY PERMIT?
Any student who wishes to take driver education may do so as of their 15th birthday. On the first day of class CDE Form (provided by Coach's) will be given to the students to obtain the permit. They will be eligible for their driver license at 16 and 90 days.
Students choosing not to take driver education may obtain a driving permit at the age of 16. This is done at the BMV. They will then be eligible to obtain their permit at 16 and 270 days.
Keep in mind ALL students must hold a permit for at least 180 days before obtaining a license.
3. DO I NEED TO OBTAIN MY PERMIT PRIOR TO ENROLLING IN DRIVER EDUCATION?
No. Students will be issued a CDE Form the first day of class. This allows the student to go to the BMV to obtain the driver education permit. All students are required to take a 50 question test at the BMV to obtain a permit. (Please see our "Resource" section to participate in a practice test.) Students do not have to retake a written test to obtain their driver license. They are, however, still required to take a driving skills test through the BMV or at Coach's to obtain their driver license.
4. WHAT DO I DO IF I LOSE MY ORIGINAL CDE FORM?
Coach's will reissue a new CDE to you at an additional charge.
5. WHAT IDENTIFICATION/DOCUMENTATION IS REQUIRED BY THE BMV TO OBTAIN A DRIVER EDUCATION LEARNER'S PERMIT?
CDE Form - Provided by Coach's Driver Education
Social Security Card
Original Birth Certificate or a Passport
2 Documents that Show the students Proof of Residence. (A complete list of documentation can be found on the BMV website - www.mybmv.com)
6. WHAT DO I NEED TO BRING WITH ME TO CLASS?
Coach's will supply everything you need for classroom. You may bring a small snack for breaks or we have vending onsite (currently located at our Avon location only).
7. WHEN MAY THE STUDENT SCHEDULE THEIR DRIVE TIMES WITH AN INSTRUCTOR?
FOR STUDENTS TAKING ON-SITE CLASSES:
Students may begin making appointments with our instructors as long as they have already obtained their permit and have completed their first day of class. PLEASE DO NOT SCHEDULE YOUR DRIVES PRIOR TO THE FIRST DAY OF CLASS. WE RESERVE THE RIGHT TO CANCEL THE DRIVES IF COACH'S POLICIES ARE NOT FOLLOWS. Students must log into their account to schedule drives. YOU DO NOT NEED TO WAIT UNTIL YOU ARE FINSIHED WITH CLASS TO SCHEDULE YOUR DRIVES.
FOR STUDENTS TAKING ON-LINE CLASS:
Students must present their Completion Certificate from the on-line company and pay for their drives. At this time, they will receive their CDE Form to obtain their Driver Education Permit. Once the permit is obtained, students may then log into their account to schedule their 6 drives.
All drives are done on a individual basis. We feel an individual approach is an asset to the student. Therefore, we do not do multiple students in the car at the same time during drives.
8. DO WE STILL ATTEND DRIVER EDUCATION WHEN THERE IS INCLEMENT WEATHER?
Coach's Driver Education tries to keep to the schedule for students driving and attending classes. There are times when drives* and/or classes must be cancelled due to inclement weather.
*Unless drives are cancelled by Coach's Driver Education, you are expected to attend your scheduled appointment or a $30 fee may be assessed for missing the drive.
We will post closing information on this web site. This allows for updated information when we must cancel services due to weather conditions.
9. WHAT HAPPENS IF I NEED TO CHANGE OR MISS ONE OF MY DRIVE TIMES?
Students who want to reschedule a drive time must do so prior to 72 hours of the scheduled drive time. If the change is not done prior to 72 hours - a $30 fee is assessed for missing the appointment.
The $30 fee is also assessed for students who miss the drive entirely.
COACH'S RESERVES THE RIGHT TO CANCEL ALL FURTHER SCHEDULED DRIVES IF ACCOUNT FEES ARE NOT PAID.
10. HOW LONG DO I HAVE TO COMPLETE DRIVER EDUCATION?
Students are encouraged to complete the program (30 hour of classroom and the 6 one hour drives) within 120 days if possible.
The 30 hours of classroom and 6 one hour drives for the driver education program are meant to be taken as closely together as possible. Students should not sign up and complete the 30 hours of classroom with the intention of waiting until ready for their driver license to do the drives. Practicing what is newly learned in the classroom with an instructor is to the optimum benefit of the new driver.
ONCE THE STUDENTS ORIGINAL DRIVER EDUCATION PERMIT EXPIRES THEY ARE NO LONGER IN THE PROGRAM.
11. HOW DO WE SCHEDULE THE 6 (1) HOUR DRIVE TIMES?
YOU DO NOT NEED TO BE COMPETED WITH THE CLASSROOM PORTION OF DRIVER EDUCATION IF TAKING CLASSES ON-SITE. AS WE SERVICE MANY STUDENTS - DO NOT WAIT TO SCHEDULE YOUR DRIVES. You will log into www.coachdrivered.com and enter the username and password you created when you resigistered. If you forgot your username and password, please call the office to obtain it. Keep in mind before scheduling the student will need to have the permit number and expiration date entered in before drives can be scheduled. You will enter this information on the student's page before scheduling.
12. WHEN ARE THE DRIVE HOURS SCHEDULED?
We drive 7 days a week here at Coach's. The office is closed at Noon on Saturdays and closed on Sundays. For drives that are scheduled when the office is closed, weekends, and after 6 pm in the evenings, and the door is locked, please wait for the instructor to arrive as they are driving with another student. DRIVES WILL GO ON IF THE OFFICE IS CLOSED if you are scheduled. AS WE SERVICE MANY STUDENTS - DO NOT WAIT TO SCHEDULE YOUR DRIVES.
13. HOW DO I GET REMINDERS ON WHEN MY DRIVE TIMES ARE?
Students need to ensure they have checked the box(es) on their enrollment form that are listed as e-mail and/or text reminders. The box(es) may be checked for both types of reminders or just one. The parent may also receive reminders if they choose to check the e-mail and/or text box(es) located further down the enrollment form. When these box(es) are checked, the student/parents will be sent a reminder of the scehduled driver education sessions. IF YOU DO NOT CONFIRM EITHER/OR THE E-MAIL/TEXT, YOU WILL NOT RECEIVE A REMINDER. IT IS THE STUDENTS RESPONSIBILITY TO KNOW THEIR CLASS/DRIVE SCEHDULE.
14. HOW LONG DO I HAVE TO HOLD A PERMIT BEFORE APPLYING FOR A DRIVER LICENSE?
With successful completion of a driver education program, the following two criterias must be met in order for a student to receive an Indiana Driver License:
Students must hold their driver education permit for 180 days prior to being eligible for their driver license.
Driver education students must be 16 years and 90 days old.
15. HOW OFTEN MAY I DRIVE?
Our system is set up so that students must have at least 2 days in between drive appointments. It is important that parents/guardians practice with the students in-between the drive appointments with an instructor.
